Stirling 900 Photography Book: A Celebration of People and Place
A visual tribute to Stirling’s community, heritage and spirit – captured through the lens of its people during a historic anniversary year.
In 2024, Stirling marked 900 years as a Royal Burgh – one of the oldest in Scotland. To honour this historic milestone, members of the public were invited to submit photographs reflecting life across the area. Curated by the Stirling Photography Festival and the Stirling 900 Steering Committee, the collection forms a vivid and personal portrait of Stirling’s people, places and enduring character.
The book was officially launched in August 2025 at the Church of the Holy Rude. Speakers included Dr David Mitchell of the Stirling Heritage Alliance, the Lord Provost of Stirling Elaine Watterson, and Festival Creative Director Janie Meikle Bland, each highlighting the importance of community storytelling and the role creativity plays in preserving local heritage.
Festival team member Zephrya Durkin reflected on the moment:

The book’s cover features an iconic image by photographer Tom Astbury, who has generously donated a signed print for auction throughout the duration of this year’s festival.

Together, the book, exhibition and launch event showcase Stirling’s pride in its past and its confidence in the future – a celebration of community, creativity and place. The book is available to buy at Legends at the Monument gift shop.
